The programme

“Standards4Sustainability” (S4S) empowers ISO’s developing country members and stakeholders in the uptake of ISO standards that drive progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through a series of capacity-building initiatives, S4S focuses on: 

• Building local expertise on selected ISO standards through knowledge and skills transfer  
• Promoting the uptake of selected ISO standards at organizational level through knowledge application   
• Raising awareness of role of ISO standards in advancing the UN SDGs at national level 

The programme, aligned with the UN SDGs, is structured around three critical dimensions: People, Planet, and Prosperity.

A “Training-of-Trainers” approach  

S4S uses a Training-of-Trainers (ToT) model to create a pool of local experts who will facilitate the uptake of selected ISO standards in organizations and enterprises at the country level. This approach also equips national standards bodies (NSBs) with the skills to promote these standards and their role in advancing the SDGs among their national stakeholders. 

The ToT journey is a two-phase process:

Taking action for a sustainable planet 

The ToT journeys aim to spark a ripple effect, increasing national awareness and driving demand for selected ISO standards in developing countries. Through targeted outreach and training activities led by local trainees and companies, the programme is expected to promote greater uptake of standards, offering a response to social, economic and environmental challenges in support of the UN SDGs.
